Friday’s Best Of The Web

It’s Friday, and that can mean only one thing: it’s Mario Brothers 3 instrumental medley time! Seriously – check out this amazing video. You’ll dream of spouting a raccoon’s tail, we guarantee it.

Specialists in the risqué ad campaign Lynx have created a word’s first with their ‘invisible ads’ installation in Australia. Apparently whited-out LCD screens were fixed to the windows of a terraced house in a hip area of Sydney. They were pretty innocent – that is until passers-by put on special filtered sunglasses that revealed all kinds of sexy goings-on in the house. The campaign launched Lynx’s first ladies-only scent, Lynx Anarchy.

Ask any idea-starved advertising creative where they get inspiration and you’ll likely find them pointing gog-eyed at a witty bit of Banksy or Shepard Fairey art and taking its lead. Street Art Utopia is the Wall Street Journal of cheeky urban art, acting as a repository of guerrilla creativity that’s respected both by grafittos and their fans alike.

You’ve spent all week working hard – perhaps now’s the right time to disengage the old brain and enjoy a of the few cheap, easy chuckles provided by the folks over at Daily Infographic with their new infographic on crazy laws. It’s illegal to die in the British Houses of Parliament, you know.

SHADOW QR CODE: Emart is one of the largest retailers in South Korea, but the business’ lunchtime trade was suffering. So, Emart and agency Cheil Worldwide got together to create “The Sunny Sale” campaign - a smart integrated campaign using a 3D QR code that gave people a unique lunchtime shopping experience. The code was placed in thirteen locations around the city and could only be scanned between 12-1pm everyday when the sun is in the right position to produce a shadow that completes the QR code. Yes… a shadow QR code that works! After scanning the code, the person received a special discount that could be used in the store or on Emart’s e-commerce site. The results: 12k coupons were issued during the promotion, new Emart membership increased by 58% and in-store sales increased by 25% during lunch hour. Very smart indeed!

HARD LIFE: This ad is definitely worth watching! It documents a day in the life of a nudist: when he wakes up, exercises and does his daily routine. The ad was directed by Jonathan Gurvit for Mercurio Cinemato. Don’t worry… you can’t see his private parts and Gurvit wants to make sure we are aware of who we should be thanking for that! We are thinking how the client was persuaded to do it. But when was the last time you remembered the name of this type of product? We won’t say anymore… see for yourself!

FLIPBOOK: Mc Cann Erickson Istanbul created a unique experience to promote Volkswagen Amarok, a vehicle that goes everywhere: on mountains, streets, water… and now on Facebook. By using a photo album with over 200 images, they created a Facebook album flipbook. You just need to use the right arrow on the keyword and you can see this never ending movie loop. It’s a cool and original ad. Check it out on their Facebook page.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SPECIMENS: New York artist Michael Mapes uses an interesting technique. He creates elaborate specimen boxes by dissecting photos and biographical DNA in the form of hair, finger nails, food, eye-lashes, dirt, makeup and then compartmentalising individual fragments within plastic bags, glass vials, magnifiers, in gelatin capsules and on insect pins. This peculiar type of art is between photography and sculpture. You can see more of his work at Parlow Gallery.

On the Wings of Love - How Etihad Came to the Rescue

The Airline business has had its fair share of PR disasters, most notably director Kevin Smith’s run in with Southwest Airlines for “being too fat” and social media wins, think KLM’s Meet and Seat and Surprise campaigns. Now Etihad Airlines have stepped up to the plate and in a small but generous gesture has responded to a consumer with specific needs. Our very own Cybercom planner Anna Ryan’s sister-in-law, Caroline was due to fly from Melbourne to Dublin with her new born son Alex and obviously was a little nervous about the long flight with such a young child. So Anna and her husband (Caroline’s brother) made a video about her and her son making the long trip from Oz to Dublin and sent it to Etihad to ask them to look after her and precious cargo on their journey home.

With the help of the Cybercom’s Social team, friends in Google, the Social House and a few strategically directed tweets to Etihad customer care Caroline and Alex seem to have been upgraded and are now in the 1st class lounge in Dubai with a nanny and a helper to carry their bags!

This just goes to show that with a little imagination and a few well directed tweets you can achieve great things. Kudos to Eithad for listening and we hope that this small but perfectly formed story gets out there and drums up some well-deserved PR for Etihad. From Caroline, and Alex, thank you Etihad.

HUG ME: This new Coca-Cola vending machine has feelings too. Ogilvy & Mather Singapore and Coca-Cola have created the 'Hug Machine', a continuation of the brand's Open Happiness campaign. This particular vending machine has the world “Hug Me” instead of the Coke’s logo and if you feel like wrapping your arms around it, you’ll get a free beverage in exchange. The Hug Me campaign has been described as an example of 'gesture-based marketing'. The brand plans to roll out the Hug Machine in other regions soon.

DESCRIPTIVE CAMERA: Grad student Matt Richardson created a Descriptive Camera: an experimental camera that turns your captured images into words… someone else’s words. It is powered by the Amazon Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing API—somewhere on the Internet a person sees the photo, describes it briefly, and the text is sent back to the camera. The resulting text is printed with the thermal printer in the style of a Polaroid print. The process takes from 3 to 6 minutes.

DRAW A BEETLE:Now you can test your driving skills in the Volkswagen Beetle website. Try/Apt and Volkswagen developed this cool ‘draw-n-drive’ website. When you enter the site, you’ll find a pair of wheels floating in a cloud-shaped area. Here you have to draw your own Beetle, which then stars in an animated story.

NOISY JELLY:You’ve burned them, smashed them –and now you can eat your musical instruments! French designers Raphaël and Marianne Cauvard have created “Noisy Jelly”, a chemistry kit that allows you to prepare your own set of musical jellies. When the different jellies are touched and manipulated, they trigger sensors on a game board. The different sounds produced are created by the concentration levels of salt in the jellies, the different shapes and the pressure of human touch. The board uses a capacitive sensor and the variations in shapes and salt concentration in the gelatine affect the sounds. Playing with your food never sounded so good…

On April 26th we’ll take part in “WALK IN MY SHOES”, a campaign for the St. Patrick’s Hospital Foundation to support mental health. The idea for the campaign is that people wear funny, unusual or mismatching shoes and help to raise funds to help young adults in need of mental health services in Ireland. We’ve got ours ready!

Ambassadors Brent Pope, Daithí Ó Sé, DJ Carey, Norah Casey, Ken Doherty, U2’s Adam Clayton and RTÉRadio 1’s John Murray are inviting everyone to join the campaign and donate just €2 to help provide FREE mental health services across the country. Everyone can get involved and help. You can also donate onlineor by texting “Shoes” to 57802. (€2 per text - €1.33 goes to Walk in My Shoes).

St. Patrick’s Hospital Foundation fundraises on behalf of St. Patrick’s University Hospital, which is Ireland’s largest independent provider of mental health services. It is a not-for-profit organisation which uses the money raised through the Foundation to provide facilities and services for the assessment, treatment and aftercare of people experiencing mental illness.

Lots of special guests and entertainment will be taking place from 9am in the IFSC, as part of the Walk in My Shoes campaign day. Visit Walk in My Shows Facebook Page to find out in which other locations walks were organised. This is definitely a great idea to raise awareness about mental health issues and a fun way to support the cause.
