Mobile, Search & Social Round Up

The digital media landscape is a rapidly, ever-changing place, where new platforms rise and fall and the public’s usage can shift overnight. Considering just how quickly the different media channels can change, we decided to do a brief catch up on what’s going on right now.

Big news in the mobile world has come out in the last couple of days in an AdMob report, which confirms Apple‘s iPhone is now the most used smartphone device in the world. Exactly half of all smartphone traffic on the Internet is now coming from iPhones. This represents a 10% gain of absolute share since August. The iPhone’s competitors; BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile, have all remained unchanged in the same period.

Ireland’s two most popular Social Media platforms have also seen dramatic changes in the last couple of months. Facebook continues to show impressive growth and now has over 1.1m Irish users at 1,128,220 people. Unfortunately things don’t seem to be on the up and up for Bebo, with their parent company, AOL, slashing jobs and cutting costs all round (including making the Irish Country Sales Manager redundant). So while Bebo still has big numbers, their relevance to an over 20 (or indeed an over 18) demographic is less than it was a mere 6 months ago.

In the world of search Econsultancy has released data estimating that the total UK Search Engine market will be worth in excess of £3bn for 2009. Within this, the paid search marketplace will grow by 12% to a value of £2.71bn, while the organic search market will grow by 14% to £376M. At the same time, however, an Econsultancy UK Search Engine Marketing Report shows findings that only 5% of companies are paying to advertise on mobile search listings. This figures shows no increase on last year.

Real-Time Relevancy – Growing Trend for 2010

image1

Trendwatching reports this week on “10 Crucial Consumer Trends” it is tracking for 2010 – everything from Urbany to (F)Luxury to Maturalism (we recommend reading the snapshot overview to understand just what these terms actual mean!). Most interesting to us as a marketing agency operating in this digital age, are the trends Real-Time Reviews, Tracking & Alerting and Profile Myning.

Real-Time Reviews:
We’ve not just tracking the evolution of the Real-Time web this year, we’re driving this trend forward, specifically utilising Facebook to create ongoing conversations between brands and fans around relevant conversations. Looking to 2010, we foresee the need for greater flexibility in marketing planning to ensure we can tap into unexpected spikes of consumer interest with a view to further igniting consumer conversation and driving brand engagement.

Tracking & Alerting:
As Trendwatching alludes, “ ‘Tracking & Acting is the new searching’, as it saves consumers time, makes it impossible to forget or miss out, and thus ultimately gives them yet another level of control”. In other words: relevancy is key. Facebook fans have already given brands permission to market to them. Publishing of the right information at the right time will ensure content is perceived as a value-add rather a hard marketing sell. Next year, we believe brand will play a bigger role in keeping their fans up to date on subjects of relevance.

Profile Myning:
Profile Myning, aka social data mining, provides huge opportunity for brand owners to better understand their target consumer. Social graphing gives a real insight into consumer’s actual interests and brand associations in a way that traditional market research has never been able to capture. We foresee interesting re-evaluations of target consumer groups, driven by social data. One thing is for sure, the ability to be more relevant in a timely way offers the greatest opportunity for brands to better engage their fans and build brand advocacy online.

Remembrance Day on Twitter

tweets

The official Twitter feed for The Royal British Legion, @PoppySupport, held a two minute silence on Twitter at 11:00am GMT this morning. This is thought to have been the first ever event of its kind to be held on the microblogging site.

The word was spread throughout the Twittersphere, even celebrities got in on the action, with singer Beverley Knight re-tweeting the message “RT Seems lots of people like the idea of #2minutesilence on Twitter 11am 11/11. Spread the word! – fab idea!!!” The Royal British Legion, who have almost 1,500 followers on Twitter, have been actively embracing the social media sphere with a view to connecting with a younger demographic.

With a strong presence on Facebook, YouTube, a regularly updated blog and a recently launched iPhone application, the two minute silence on Twitter today is another strong initiative from the Legion which shows how Twitter can be successfully woven into the wider social media strategy.
