Did you turn off the lights?

Earth Hour took place on Saturday 28th March at 8.30pm. The global event, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature, is a call for the people of the world to vote for the Earth over Global Warming, by simply switching off your lights for an hour. Started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, by the WWF and the Sydney Morning Herald, the event has grown from the 2.2 million residents of Sydney who initially participated, to a global event with support from the highest echelons of industry and government.

Celebrating Cybercom’s 10th Birthday at 29,000 Feet

2009 is an important year! Cybercom turns 10 years old. 10 years?! It’s hard enough to believe that digital has been around for a decade. But then that we’ve been doing what we do best since 1999! So how does an Agency as seasoned as this celebrate such a milestone?

Huge party? Champagne by the bath load? Useless tacky gifts for everyone in the office?

Definitely not. Well, there will of course be a party but… we’ve thought long and hard about what 10 years means. It’s primarily a celebration of our brilliant people. So we’ve decided to give the opportunity of a lifetime to lucky members of the team as well as giving our collective time to the charities and communities that are most important to us all.

First up we have teamed with Gavin Bate of Moving Mountains, who is at this moment is preparing to climb Mount Everest. On 3rd April Gavin will commence his walk to Everest Base Camp for his 5th attempt to summit the mountain. Gavin is acting as a professional guide for 2 Irish climbers on the initial summit attempt. He then intends to climb the mountain on his own and without Oxygen. The sole reason Gavin is undertaking this project is to raise the profile of Moving Mountains and at least £50,000 for his charity while doing so.

Gavin previously worked with us on Bushmills Trek last year where we got talking about what we could potentially do to help his charity. Since then we have agreed to an exchange of assists with Gavin. His mountaineering skills and connections in exchange for our digital marketing nous. Basically Cybercom is going to provide search marketing support to the Adventure Alternatives website on an ongoing basis and provide development support to Gavin’s Everest website.

In return Gavin is giving two lucky Cybercomers the opportunity to visit Everest Base Camp. The first person will join Gavin and the two summit climbers on the walk in two weeks. They will record the walk in by way of video and regular blog postings. They will also be taking with them a Cybercom flag to then leave at Base Camp for Gavin to take to the top of Everest! Then a second lucky Cybercomer will return to Everest Base camp in the 3rd/4th week of May to be there as Gavin goes from Base Camp (15,000 ft) to the summit (29,028 ft) in a 3-5 day period.  This person will accompany a fully guided Adventure Alternative group who would be walking in for this period. This person will be there to exclusively report and record any successful summit.

As a company, Cybercom has dedicated its manpower to help out three Irish charities over the remaining three quarters of the year. Essentially we, as a group, will go out and do whatever it is that the charity needs us to do. Collect money on the street, landscape gardens, paint walls or entertain people. Basically whatever help we can give.

So who’s going to Everest and what charities will we be helping?

The two lucky Cybercomers are Stephen Murphy and Richard Fitzgerald.

Cybercom Mountaineers

Following a hotly contested Tuesday evening showdown, the two lads used their song writing and paper maché skills to clinch the chance to visit the tallest place on earth! We also collectively used our power to vote and chose Don Bosco, DSPCA and Grubby Boots as our three charities of 2009.

Make sure to keep in touch with the lads’ journeys and our ongoing community work here on our blog. And in case you missed it earlier in the year, here’s a piece of viral we created on the changing face of Digital over the last 10 years. Enjoy!

How to ruin a potential job with a Tweet!

A story broke across the blogosphere last week about an applicant, ‘theconnor’, who was going for a job with Cisco. Following his interview ‘theconnor’ tweeted this:

“Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.”

Tim Levad, a senior employee of at Cisco, also saw the Tweet and Tweeted back:

“Who is the hiring manager. I’m sure they would love to know that you will hate the work. We here at Cisco are versed in the web.”

The ‘theconnor’ quickly set his account to private, trying to remove all trace of his little outpour. Unfortunately we all know nothing stays hidden on the net and Tweets are public for the world to see! This went viral overnight. In a further twist of fate, someone out there also figured out that ‘theconnor’s personal website is theconnor.net – another fact he tried to hide, deleting a huge amount of information overnight, and installing “whois privacy protection” on his domain name. However, thanks to Google Cache you can still enjoy all of his deleted content.

So be careful what you post on the Internet. It is a public place and nothing stays hidden for very long!

Extreme Sheparding!

sheep

You’ve got to hand it to London’s Viral Factory, this week they’ve released a killer viral to promote Samsung’s LED line.

In the video, a team calling themselves the Baa- Studs “took to the hills of Wales armed to the teeth with sheep, LEDs and a camera, to create a huge amazing LED display”!

The result is at once both hilarious and arty. Hilarious because we witness them playing pong with sheep (and very talented dogs) and arty – well – because there’s even a reference to the Mona Lisa!

Reviews on Youtube are largely appreciative but like all good virals it’s generated a great debate as to weather this was merely ‘or just plain old ‘fake’.

Tilt and Shift

Sydney based photographer Keith Loutit prides himself on taking photographs and shooting short films in ordinary places. Combining a variety of techniques including tilt-shift and time-lapse photography, he aims to help people take a second look at places that are familiar to them.

This is all 100% ‘real’, but there are some new techniques here, such as using time lapse to create the illusion of forward movement for the helicopter ocean scenes. This is called Bathtub IV. Have a look!

A Twitter-Uprising

Twitter is by far the flavour of the month and this is firmly indicated by the stats which are coming through from ComScore. Since the start of the year, user levels have rocketed, from a Q4 08 base of under 10,000 users, Twitter use has more than tripled in 8 weeks to over 36,000 users.

So what is it that Twitter have done? Oddly enough, there have been no major changes implemented by the Microblogging service in the last 3 months that could easily account for the jump in Irish users. One thing is for certain, a quick review of blogs and social network pages quickly shows that most of the people active within those spaces are all Tweeting too, with a lot of people now integrating the two services so display the same feeds.
