Friday’s Best of the Web

Friday's Best of the Web

Tapedtogether is an experiment in crowdsourcing and online content curation resulting in a Summer Playlist for 2010 featuring an eclectic mix of artists from Frank Sinatra to DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, all put together on a website inspired by the iconic artwork of Saul Bass.

Similar to NBCs Olympic coverage, CNN brings you the World Cup Twitter tracker an easy way to stay up to date with the buzz about the games.

David Perez sold his soul for 1 week to Twitter. He wanted to go to the Advertising Festival in Cannes and Leo Burnett agreed to send him, the only condition was he had to partake in a social media experiment where he did everything his Twitter followers commanded him to. What would you get him to do? He’s already tattooed the ‘fail whale’ on his arm!

It’s summer and the weather is nice! Now is not the time to be eating in front of your work computer, get involved and take back your lunch while the sun is still shining!

Branding the Internet Of Things

Science fiction often has an uncanny way of predicting the future and turning into science fact. Forty years before the first atom bomb was dropped on Japan, HG Wells was writing about it, while more recently, William Gibson predicted the spread of the internet and virtual reality in his cult classic Neuromancer. In 1982 Bruce Sterling coined the term “spimes” to describe objects that can be “tracked through space and time throughout the lifetime of the object.”

It now seems that time is upon us as we enter into an era where the cost of sensors, processors and transmitters are so low that it’s fast becoming cost effective to put them inside everyday objects. Even your humble toothbrush may soon sense and communicate socially about where it is and how it’s being used in space and time.

In last weeks post we looked at Stickybits the people helping you to ‘tag your world’ through threaded conversations around objects and confirming that the age of the ‘Internet Of Things’ is truly upon us.

The possibility now exists for brands to track the consumer’s usage of their products while uncovering a mountain of data about customer habits. Combine this with what your customers are saying on social networks like Facebook and Twitter and hey presto! You have the ability understand how they use the product, what features they use and where they use it.

The possibilities are endless, DoGood Headquarters has developed an ambitious concept for a reusable foldable coffee cup that can be folded back into your pocket or purse. It’s BPA free – and possesses a solar powered clock, Bluetooth integration with your mobile phone and respective real-time Twitter feed. Not to mention automatic Foursquare check-in.

All this of this signals the transformation of Web 2.0 to Web 3.0 where more and more things/objects/appliances become connected to the web and communicate with each other. Sounds a bit like Skynet from the movie Terminator? Who can tell? But this much is certain; when products are connected to the Internet it will open up a whole new world of commercial possibilities for manufacturers and retailers alike who can rub their hands together with glee at the future ahead.

Stickybits Is The Biz’

stickybits

As we know, key digital trends at the moment are mobile and location based services. Foursquare’s success is partly driven by its ability to transform locations into media and with this, connecting real life products to interactive elements online has become increasingly important. All the more reason to take notice of New York based Stickybits, the service that allows you to ‘tag your world’.

Essentially you can add digital content to any barcode out there. All you have to do is download the Stickybits app (available for iPhone and Android) scan your barcode and attach content. When someone else scans the geo-tagged barcode again, they’ll see whatever was attached to it along with who else has scanned it along the way. You can also get notifications when it’s been scanned, changes location or gets new bits.

For $9.95 you can buy a pack of 20 barcode stickers that can be attached to anything as well as downloadable, printable barcodes that can be glued, ironed, printed, tattooed or otherwise stuck onto anything in the real world. What about a personal video piece on a birthday card or attach your resume to your business card, the possibilities are endless.

Recently on the company’s blog they announced “official bits,” which allows brands to automatically own their barcodes, so that consumers are sent to branded information when they scan any partner barcode.Their first strategic partner for official bits is PepsiCo, which is using Stickybits to communicate with consumers through its products.

In a Techcrunch article from last week, Stickybits founder Seth Goldstein put this into perspective,

“In 1996, Webpages became media. In 2001, search became media. In 2005, people became media. In 2007, status updates became media. Last year, places became media. And in 2010, he predicts, objects will become media.”

He may well be right but people are still getting to grips with updating their Facebook status while trying to get their head around checking into their Foursqaure location. That said it is an exciting proposition for brands looking for new ways to communicate with their customers and extent their reach by enhancing their barcodes with compelling content.

Google TV

Google TV

Big news at last week’s Google Developers Conference with Google announcing they are bringing search to your TV viewing experience with the launch of Google TV.

As more and more TV content is available online, and as homes move to digital TV, the actual convergence of these platforms is now a reality.

The impact on how we consume video content in the very near future will be immense and as Google ‘open source’ the Google TV platform this will stimulate significant innovation by developers.

You will of course need a set-top box to facilitate this and an Internet enabled TV.

Google will initially partner with Sony and the service will be available in North America later this year.

This Google animation explains it all quite eloquently

Google Provides lots more information for Top Organic Search Queries

Google’s mass roll out of personalised search is having a dramatic affect on both keyword positions and overall website traffic. Google recently announced they would provide more data in the Top Search Queries, making it a lot easier to track fluctuations in organic search positions.

The tool will now provide impressions and click through rates for those keywords driving organic traffic to a website. It will allow users to track how their keyword positions change on a weekly basis and what effect this is having on organic traffic to their website.
