More brilliant people join the Cybercom team!

The last few weeks have been a bit crazy on the recruitment side of things! We’re delighted to welcome some new people to the team.

Our Media Innovation team has undergone a number of structural changes. The new faces here are John Maher (Media Innovation Director), Dave Hayes (Digital PR & Communities Manager) and Eamon Collins (Search Campaign Manager) – all of whom come from illustrious backgrounds with 20 years digital marketing experience between them!

We’ve also been very lucky to find even more creative talent in the form of our new studio additions – Damian Bilski (Lead Designer) and Clara Hooper (Junior Designer).

Finally, the warm welcome is extended to smart Client Service folk – Frances Macken (Account Manager), Sam Tanham (Account Executive) and Lisa Roche (who will be joining as an Account Executive in a couple of weeks time).

There are now 40 of us in Cybercom. One lonely sole in London and the rest of us here in Dublin :)

Fancy yourself as a Chief Cultural Officer?

Thanks to Grant Mc Cracken, Mark Earls and all at Dare for last Friday’s Chief Culture Officer Bootcamp in London, says Strategic Brand Planner Claire Hyland, who was there to learn about the role of a Chief Culture Officer.

McCracken talked about his recent book Chief Culture Officer and argued that every company needs a chief cultural officer to anticipate cultural trends rather than passively waiting and reacting, ultimately to create value for shareholders, move product, create profit and increase the bottom line.

Essentially the role requires monitoring of culture (defined as “everything out there”) – this involves everything from tracking what music people are listening to, the food they are eating, how they are styling their houses to the media they are consuming. It shouldn’t be confused with cool – it’s more long-term and substance-based than that.

A Chief Culture Officer has the ability to see things early and decipher what’s “the trend that cools into culture”. CCOs They should have the ability to process massive amounts of data and spot crucial developments among an array of possibilities. Having worked in consumer insights/trends for years, the most obvious trait is still curiosity – are you eager to learn, do you keep your eyes and ears open and do you like to make connections between seemingly unconnected things? If so, chances are you’d make a good CCO. But as Grant reminded us, everyone in the work environment is a source of cultural knowledge, so keep on sharing inspirational and interesting stuff with your colleagues!

Of course, just like meeting of like-minded folk, the most interesting things come from the conversations with fellow attendees – great chats on expanding the traditional marketing T-cut to include some more cultural references (apparently, in a recent survey conducted by Microsoft some 60% of young males interviewed claimed to love cooking – who would have thought?), as well as stimulating discussion around digital re-mashing and personalisation.

Since my New York days, I’ve realised the amazing things that brands can do at the convergence of culture and commerce. After last Friday’s session, I’m even more convinced. Here’s to bringing a greater cultural understanding into the Cybercom workplace and from there to our clients.

P.S. If in London soon, eat at Leon – healthy fast food like you’ve never had it before.

P.P.S. Don’t forget to buy Grant’s book!

By public suggestion this ‘experiment’ by Mat Bisher made it to this week’s Best of the Web. There are good arguments put forward as to why Apple won’t support Flash, but this is still funny!

The concept for this site was simple: Musician Asher Roth wanted a unique way to share his day to day experiences with his fans. The result: Asher carries around a card which has an illustration of the website printed on it. He takes on-location pics holding the card, with the resulting photos uploaded as the landing page for the website. Visitors to the site navigate using the card as the primary interface. What’s really nice is the use of FLARToolKit so the graphic elements change to match the colour of the card. Note: this concept is best explained by visiting the site for yourself!

The Green Economy – A Business & Leadership Briefing

Last week, we joined a number of Irish companies to discuss the future of business, finance and investment within the new environmental reality. A number of leading international sustainability figures discussed and examined how technology can be a key enabler in a more sustainable and prosperous future for all. The timing could not have been better for Cybercom as we have just embarked on a project with RealEyes Sustainability that will put sustainability at the heart of our business.

Speaker highlights included:

Eamon Ryan TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources told delegates of the sustainable path to 2050 which would see us lower carbon and benefit from the opportunities in the new Green Economy.

Will Day, Chair, Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) in the UK, advises UK ministers on major sustainability issues. He is also Special Advisor to the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and Senior Associate of the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership. He told Ireland’s business leaders why sustainability matters – and why it should matter to business.

Chris Tuppen, Chief Sustainability Officer, BT Group, was recently named ‘one of the 50 people who could save the planet from climatic disaster’ by a special newspaper panel, Chris was co-editor of SMART 2020, a report that looked at how, where and to what effect ICT could be used to enable a low carbon economy. He shared with delegates how BT is actively lowering its carbon footprint, and demonstrated how ICT can facilitate carbon reduction in other industries.

Dick Budden, Director, Carbon Disclosure Project, Ireland, explained that global investors now see sustainable practices and environmental impacts as key concerns when assessing an organisation’s value.

Check out the videos for each speaker if you have a few minutes.

It’s amazing to think that, back in 1931, Thomas Edison commented ‘I’d put my money on solar energy – I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.’ His words have never been more pertinent but they also put the opportunity for environmental change and green business into clear perspective. At Cybercom, we are very excited about any small role we can play to accelerate this change.
